Nature at Night

Part of the global initiative: City Nature Challenge.

About the activity

Nature is all around us, in the desert and in our cities. From butterflies on balconies to plant sprouting along sidewalks, urban spaces are alive with wild wonders waiting to be noticed.

In the Year of Community, Emirates Nature-WWF is proud to join the City Nature Challenge, a global initiative that encourages people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities.

In this event: Nature at Night.

As a citizen scientist, you will explore your surroundings and record the wildlife you come across, be it plants animals, birds, insects or any other creature. This valuable data contributes to scientific research and supports local conservation efforts to protect wildlife.

No experience is necessary, although a reasonable level of fitness is required. Volunteers will need to be able to walk in desert sand for 2-3 km and record data on their cellphones.

Let’s come together and demonstrate the amazing community spirit of the UAE! Together, we can amplify scientific research and share our unique local species with the rest of the world.

The data you help collect will support the expansion of our conservation efforts, and will be used to:

  • Identify species, distribution and important areas for the various life stages of each species
  • Monitor recovery and pressures
  • Investigate how Protected Areas affect populations
  • Data collected around the various species can feed into the National Plans of Action for the conservation of these species and support IUCN red listing efforts
  • Help change people’s attitudes and behaviors towards bats, scorpions and geckos.

This activity supports our objective to:

  • Protect 30% of the UAE’s wild areas by 2030.
  • Make 5,000 new research-grade observations on iNaturalist– that’s 30% more data than we currently have for the UAE on the iNaturalist app.

An informative and interesting experience to be in Nature at Night and carry out the activities as a volunteer to explore the diverse wildlife inhabiting the desert. Emirates Nature - WWF Representatives shared knowledge related to identify various species, about the wildlife and habitat in the surrounding areas along with opportunity to make observation for reptiles and insects in the surrounding areas using the iNaturalist App. Thank you Emirates Nature - WWF and all the participating volunteers.

It was an amazing experience, revealing that the desert hosts a surprising range of creatures. The WWF Volunteers were remarkably friendly and generously imparted their knowledge to the entire group. A big Thank you goes for their efforts.

Thoroughly enjoyed the event and it was great to meet wildlife-impassioned people from a number of different organisations. Very well organised and massive thanks to Arbella and Amal both very knowledgeable and very helpful individuals.
