Nature at Night

Discover what the wildlife gets up to under the cover of darkness.

About the activity

During this activity, you will have the chance to explore the diverse wildlife inhabiting the desert. Your active involvement in this activity contributes significantly to data collection for ongoing research through the lens of citizen science, as it aids in preserving the natural beauty of the region. Join us for an event that combines education, hands-on conservation, and community connection as we collectively contribute to the ongoing research and safeguard the environmental treasures for generations to come.

No experience is necessary, although a reasonable level of fitness is required. Volunteers will need to be able to walk in desert sand for 2-3 km and record data on their cellphones. We welcome volunteers of all ages; however, it is not suitable for babies, and volunteers under 18 can only attend when accompanied by adults, please reach out to [email protected] for inquiries.

The area of impact it contributes to

The data you help collect will support the expansion of our conservation efforts, and will be used to:

  • Identify species, distribution and important areas for the various life stages of each species
  • Monitor recovery and pressures
  • Investigate how Protected Areas affect populations
  • Data collected around the various species can feed into the National Plans of Action for the conservation of these species and support IUCN red listing efforts
  • Help change people’s attitudes and behaviors towards bats, scorpions and geckos.

This activity supports our objective to:

  • Protect 30% of the UAE’s wild areas by 2030.
  • Make 5,000 new research-grade observations on iNaturalist– that’s 30% more data than we currently have for the UAE on the iNaturalist app.
