Falaj Clean-up and Revegetation

Volunteer to clean up the UAE’s newest Nature & Heritage Trail in Fujairah

About the activity

The founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was a visionary leader who had a deep appreciation for nature and a strong commitment to protecting the environment. He believed that the natural beauty of the country was a valuable asset that needed to be preserved and cherished for future generations.

In recent years, groundwater levels have dipped as demand for freshwater has continued to grow. Sustainable use of water is now a top priority for communities.

Join Emirates Foundation's Takatof Social Volunteering Program, with the support of Emirates Nature WWF, to revive the ancient falaj system in Al Bithnah village in Fujairah. A falaj is a series of traditional wells and canals which channels underground water towards community farms, settlements, plants and wildlife, allowing all forms of life to thrive. Your support will not only support local farmers but also promote biodiversity in the region, while also providing a unique opportunity to learn about the area's rich history and natural beauty.

The participants will:

- Survey and clean up litter polluting the falaj and heritage trail

- Learn about the important history of the area

- Visit a plant nursery and plant native trees

- Record necessary data using scientific methods

- Help restore the beautiful Hajar mountains

Together, we can continue Sheikh Zayed's conservation legacy by working towards the protection and preservation of our natural environment.

Which area of Impact does it contribute to?

Our goal is bigger than helping nature survive. We are restoring urban and wild spaces to make sure that animals and plants thrive.

This activity supports our objectives to:

  • Restore 20,000 m2 of natural habitats (that’s nearly the size of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque complex in Abu Dhabi!)

  • Create  Nature Trails in the UAE to give local biodiversity a safe home and encourage more people to spend time in nature.

Activity Sponsor

This volunteering activity is spearheaded by Emirates Foundation and our conservation work in the area is acheived in collaboration with Etihad Rail, Dolphin Energy, as well as the Fujairah Environmental Authority, Fujairah Adventures, the Crown Prince Court - Fujairah and with the support of the local communities, who are joining hands to explore solutions to restore access to fresh water and introducing modern water management techniques. The project aims to promote sustainable farming and preserve the site’s biodiversity.

It was informative and enjoyable at the same time. I want to thank Arabella and Mona for making this activity amazing and memorable!. Meeting other volunteers and exchanging ideas and small talks with them was another something I enjoyed a lot.
